It’s that time of year again when you get to judge the best Yacht Racing images of the year. I’m delighted to be selected in the finalists for the second year running… but this year I’m especially pleased because my picture is not of helmeted technicians piloting their multi-million dollar preying mantis up and down a rectangle of carefully chosen flat water… but of my friends in Lamu, racing dhows with just as much passion, spending very little money, relying on physical prowess and using their hearts as much as their heads to remind us what sail boat racing should be about.
From the Pantaenius Award Website….
A record 152 professional photographers from 30 nations submitted their best image for this year’s competition, confirming the truly international reach of the award and the extraordinary talent of photographers capturing the sport of sailing around the world.
The seven members of the international jury have now selected the 80 best images, which are available online for the public vote. The jury’s votes will separately determine the overall winner of the Pantaenius Yacht Racing Image Award.
The top 20 images will be showcased at Metstrade Amsterdam, the world’s largest marine equipment trade exhibition, from November 17–19.
Two major prizes will be presented:
• The Pantaenius Yacht Racing Image Award – selected by the international jury
• The Public Award – determined by the number of votes received onlinePublic voting is open from October 20 until November 14.
If you value old school racing values, and don’t mind supporting SWS … Then give us a vote. It only takes 20 seconds!
And in our annual survey of the 80 chosen images we calculate that 11 of them relate in some way or other to traditional/classic boat racing which is down one from 12 last year!
