Miscellanea

(Various things that have been collected together, late 16th centuary from the Latin miscellus- ‘mixed’.)

This week we seem to have accumulated a locker full of items that we thought we should clear out, by putting them all into one big news post. Enjoy the browse.

Australian 12ft Cadet Dinghy Open Australian Championships and Centenary Reunion Function

The Australian 12ft Cadet dinghy has a long and proud history and was sailed by some of Australia's best sailors including Jock Sturrock and Sir James Hardy.

The first Cadet dinghy interstate competition was held in Hobart in 1924 which ended in a tie between MayFly (Tas) and Penguin (NSW). In 1927 Lord Stonehaven, then Governor General of Australia presented a perpetual trophy for the series and since that time the Stonehaven Cup has been contested by all states of the Commonwealth.

To celebrate the 100 years of competition, the Royal Brighton Yacht Club will be proudly hosting the Open Centenary Australian Championships in January 2024.

Racing will be back to back with a total of 7 races scheduled and a maximum of 3 races on any one day.
Whist the regatta will be an open event, the series will include a classic division for the wooden boats and a team's event with four boats from each state forming their state team.
Further information including the notice of race, entry form, list of entrants and Centenary Reunion function booking form are listed on the Royal Brighton Yacht Club website.

Looking for and Update on WINDWARD

We received the email below this week from Greg Bell

I am looking to catch up with a Sydney yacht "Windward". For many years moored
at Mitchell's boat shed at Church Pt in Pittwater. Was sold after owners death and refitted back to original rigging for day sailing. Haven't seen her for many years and as I crewed on her for 30 years would like tosee how the beautiful old girl is going now.
Regards
Greg Bell

We presume he is referring to the 40 foot Gaff Centreboard Cutter designed by J.Pickering built by J.Hayes and Sons, Careening Cove in 1923 restored by Simon Sadubin and his team at Sydney Wooden Boats. If you know where she is now, let us know

Ashley Sharples one of the new custodians of Mercedes IV, now competing with the Port Phillip CYAA fleet, offered to share his images from the 2023 Cup Regatta

We also added a few images from board ACROSPIRE III thanks to Tony Stevenson.

If you enjoyed Paul De Roza’s series of films on the DUYFKEN then have a look at his latest piece from the Timber Boat Festival on Pittwater hosted by the Royal Motor Yacht Club earlier this month

The 2024 Sydney Harbour Regatta is intending to have a special Division for Classic Yachts.

Mister Christian-Photo Andrea Francolini

Scheduled for the 2nd and 3rd March, as a whole, the Regatta has 19 divisions, abot 190 keelboats will race over 7 course areas, throughout Sydney Harbour as well as offshore near Sydney Heads. The Classic Courses will be set within the main harbour around marks familiar to those who race regularly out of SASC. Martin Ryan, Custodian of MERCEDES III alerted us to this short video made during the CYAA Cup Regatta early this month.

If you want to know what its like to be on board a 1967 admirals Cup Winner in 2023 take a look below. It all seems very relaxed to me!

In August we posted a story telling our readers that CELESTE the 34ft Reimers design based on sydney harbour, was looking for a new custodian.

Well, despite some interest she’s still looking for someone to fall in love with her. It shouldn’t be hard with a boat this lovely and adept. She’s a near sistership to Adlard Coles’ famous COHOE. And the price is entirely realistic. If you would like to find out more then get in touch.
